The Film Studies Program is an interdisciplinary curriculum in the College
of Arts and Sciences, directed by Asst. Prof. Bernadette Wegenstein in the
department of Media Study. The Film Studies curriculum brings together film
related courses throughout the College of Arts and Sciences taught by
thirty different faculty members, offering students a critical approach to
film (filmmaking will be only a minor, and elective component): they will
acquire historical, theoretical, and intercultural tools to study films from
around the world and become capable of reading the art of cinema as cultural
critics. Screenings, film festivals, the Buffalo
Film Seminars, and
conferences will be offered to enrich students' film expertise in Buffalo.
The Film Studies Program has a BA curriculum with 120 overall
credit hours (46 within Major) with the opportunity to continue
on with an interdisciplinary MA in Humanities. This advanced
degree program requires a total of 36 graduate credit hours,
consisting of 12-18 credit hours of film studies course work
and an additional 12-18 credit hours of approved film-related
courses in arts and sciences departments. Students complete
a 6 credit hour final thesis length paper, under the supervision
of two faculty advisors.
Students will work with faculty members from UB’s
College of Arts and Sciences from the departments of African
American Studies, Asian
Studies Program, Anthropology,
Art,
Department
of American Studies, Communications,
Comparative
Literature, English,
Media
Study, Romance
